Visit the Kingston Frontenac Public Library page of the Our Ontario website. To search  across multiple newspapers, type a name or keyword into the Search Within These Results box. Although the optical character recognition (OCR) process allows for keyword searching of these old newspapers, it is far from foolproof. For newspapers published from 1810-1849 it is a good idea to perform a second search using the Digital Kingston Historic Newspaper Index (below).

Digital Kingston Historic Newspaper Index (1810 to 1849)

Click the Indexes link at the top of this page. In the navigation pane, click to view the subheadings under Historic Kingston Newspapers and choose Search the Index. Type your search term into the box. To limit your search to particular dates or newspapers, click Advanced Options.

The entries in the Index were generated using optical character recognition (OCR) technology from a hand-indexed, typewritten card file. Although the search results tend to be good, some OCR errors do exist. In particular, the terms Mar/May and Jan/Jun may be transposed.

No paid advertisements or announcements are included in this index. If you are looking for birth, marriage and death notices, try the Our Ontario site (above) or browse the newspapers by date (below).

Click Browse All by Date in the left-hand navigation pane.

While some online tools exist for searching Kingston-Frontenac newspapers, there are still many newspaper issues that have not yet been digitized or indexed. This link will help you to find browsable newspapers online, and those that are available in print or on microfilm.

In those that have been scanned, the optical character recognition is often poor because the quality of the original texts was faded, blurred or distorted. For that reason, it is always a good idea to browse the online images as you would a microfilm reel. Do not rely on the search function, as it will miss many instances of your search term(s).
